Scope of practice guidelines now available

20 Dec 2019

An advance copy of the revised Scope of practice guidelines has been published by the Dental Board of Australia (the Board).

The revised Scope of practice guidelines have been strengthened to help clarify the changes to the revised Scope of practice registration standard.

The revised registration standard was approved at the November meeting of the Council of Australia Governments (COAG) Health Council (CHC). Health Ministers were also given a copy of the supporting revised guidelines.

Advance copies of the revised registration standard and revised guidelines have been published on the Board’s website so dental practitioners can become familiar with both documents before they come into effect next year.

The Board is continuing to engage with the dental profession and key stakeholders in the lead-up to the planned start of the registration standard in mid-2020. This will include stakeholder forums for the profession in each capital city and in some regional hubs.

Forums are initially planned for the afternoons of:

  • Friday 13 March 2020 in Sydney
  • Friday 20 March 2020 in Melbourne.

Practitioners and stakeholders should monitor the Board’s website from early 2020 to not miss updates about other stakeholder forums as information will be published when the details of each forum are finalised.

This information will be published on a webpage dedicated to implementation of the revised standard. The webpage, which will be launched early next year, will be a hub for:

  • the revised Scope of practice registration standard
  • the revised Scope of practice guidelines
  • a reflective practice tool
  • FAQ, and
  • other helpful resources.

A recent Board news item includes more information about the work leading up to Health Ministers’ approving the revised Scope of practice registration standard.
